Pain in the butt?

Hamstring tendinopathy is an overuse injury of the hamstring tendon.  Hamstrings are the muscles at the back of your thigh, which attach to your pelvic bones by tendons deep in your buttock.

When the hamstrings are not strong enough, or out of balance with the surrounding muscles these tendons pull on the pelvic bones causing an achy pain deep in your butt which can travel down the back of the leg and can feel worse when sitting.

Unlike an acute tear, the pain usually comes on gradually.  It is particularly common in runners, but can affect anyone especially if your pelvis is tipped forward.  When your pelvis tips it pulls the hamstrings up and they are stuck in a constant lengthened position

It will feel like you need to stretch but this can make it worse. The answer is to reduce the pull on the tendon by maintaining a neutral pelvis, especially in bending or folding, and build strength in the hamstring and tendon. Bridges are a great way to do this.
